Before You Begin

Consider these factors before starting your panelling project:

  • Door type: Ensure your door is suitable for panelling. The surface should be completely flat and flush. Hollow core doors may require solely adhesive, whereas solid doors can accommodate screws / nails.
  • Hardware: Take note of handles or other attachments. You'll need to remove handles before work and refit them considering the additional thickness of the panelling.
  • Functionality: Ensure panelling won't interfere with the door's operation. - Choose thin 6mm - 9mm panelling to avoid making your doors too thick.
  • Aesthetics: Plan your panel layout with our designer above to complement your interior design.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Preparation

Clean the door thoroughly to remove any dust or debris, and sand very lightly to ensure good adhesion, then clean again to remove sanding residue. Protect the floor with a drop cloth to avoid paint stains.

2. Measurement and Planning

Measure the door and sketch your desired panel layout. Consider the door's proportions and any existing hardware when planning. Our door panel designer will do the hard work, make sure to save your plan and download the PDF, and keep these measurements on hand.

3. Cutting the Strips

Cut your MDF or wood strips to size using a saw. You can find all the required measurements above or in your door panelling PDF plan.

4. Dry Fitting

Lay out all cut pieces on the door without glue. Adjust as needed to ensure everything fits perfectly, especially around hardware. If you are not removing your door prior to fitting, lay out all the pieces on the floor and measure to confirm the fit.

5. Gluing

Apply wood glue to the back of each strip and place on the door. Use clamps or heavy books to hold strips in place while the glue dries. Be mindful of excess glue squeeze-out.

For doors that are still attached, use nails/screws to keep panels in place.

6. Sanding

Once the glue is completely dry, sand the entire door to smooth any uneven areas or glue residue. Start with 120 grit, then finish with 220 grit for a smooth surface.

7. Painting or Staining

Apply your chosen finish. For paint, use a primer first, then apply 2-3 coats of paint. For stain, apply evenly and wipe off excess, then seal with varnish. Don't forget to paint or stain the door edges.

8. Finishing Touches

Once the paint or stain is fully dry, reattach any hardware that was removed. Consider upgrading to new hardware that complements your newly panelled door.

Hardware Considerations

When panelling around existing hardware:

  • Measure carefully around handles, locks, and hinges.
  • Use a jigsaw or coping saw to cut precise openings in panels.
  • Consider temporarily removing hardware for easier application.
  • If replacing hardware, ensure new fixings are appropriate for the increased door thickness.

Pro Tips

  • Always measure twice, cut once to avoid wasting materials.
  • Use a sharp pencil for precise markings.
  • Sand all cut edges before gluing for a smoother finish.
  • Allow proper drying time between steps for best results.
  • Consider the door's swing direction when planning panel layout.
  • Use a brad nailer for extra security on larger panels.
  • Apply wood filler to any gaps for a seamless look.
  • For hollow core doors, use thinner panelling material to reduce weight.
  • Test your chosen finish on a scrap piece before applying to the door.
