Frequently Asked Questions
What is MDF?
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is an engineered wood product manufactured by breaking down hardwood and softwood residuals into wood fibres. These fibres are combined with wax and resin binders, then formed into panels under high temperature and pressure. This composition makes MDF an ideal material for wall panelling, it’s machinable, smooth and lightweight.
Are The MDF Wall Panels Moisture Resistant?
Yes, our MDF is moisture resistant and suitable for use in bathrooms and kitchens, however they are not suitable for direct contact with water. The panels should be sealed and finished with appropriate paints and any gaps should be caulked and sanded to further protect from moisture.
Can I Paint and Stain MDF?
Yes, MDF takes paint and stain well due to its smooth, uniform surface. To achieve optimal results and protect the MDF from potential water damage, ensure proper preparation, sealing, and finishing techniques with MDF-specific paint products.
What Paint Should I Use On MDF Panelling?
When painting MDF panels, use an oil-based primer and paint for increased moisture-resistance and excellent adhesion. Oil-based paints are also suitable for sanding down to a smooth surface. Alternatively, use an MDF specific water-based primer and paint, ensuring it offers moisture resistance and durability. Advantages of water-based paints over oil-based are their non-yellowing and non-toxic properties.
How Are MDF Panels Attached To The Wall?
Attach MDF panels to walls using adhesive, nails, or screws. For best results, apply adhesive to the back of the panel in a grid pattern and firmly press the panel onto the wall surface. For additional strength, nail or screw the panels into wall studs, however adhesive should suffice alone. Use caulk to fill the holes and sand smooth for a seamless finish.
What Thickness Should I Choose For My Panels?
The appropriate thickness for MDF panels depends on their intended use and style. Our standard thicknesses are selected for our distinct styles of panelling. Our MDF thicknesses include 9mm, 12mm and 15mm and 25mm. Thinner panels (6-9mm) work well as decorative wall coverings, while thicker panels (12-25mm) provide more durability and insulation benefits. Assess your project's needs and select the wall panelling with the thickness that best suits your projects suitability.
