What Are Panel Mouldings?
Panel mouldings are the individual strips that create decorative frames on your walls. Unlike complete wall panels that cover entire surfaces, these mouldings form the outline structure of traditional panelling layouts.
You arrange them in rectangles or squares to create wainscoting, full-height panelling, or geometric patterns. Each moulding piece sits flat against your wall, creating raised frames that add depth and visual interest without the bulk of full panelling systems.
The mouldings work by creating shadow lines where they meet the wall. This gives the appearance of recessed panels without actually needing panel inserts. It's how traditional Georgian and Victorian panelling was often constructed.
For complete systems, our wall panelling kits include matching mouldings alongside all other components. These save planning time and ensure everything coordinates properly.
Moulding Profile Options
We offer seven main profiles, each creating different visual effects:
Astragal (25mm × 15mm) - Our most popular profile. Features a gentle curved face that works in both traditional and contemporary settings.
Astragal Large (34mm × 17.5mm) - Bolder version of the classic astragal. Creates more pronounced shadow lines for rooms with higher ceilings.
Astragal Maxi (40mm × 25mm) - Our most substantial astragal profile. Works well in grand rooms or where you want maximum visual impact.
Inset (20mm × 9mm) - Slimmer, more subtle design with traditional detailing. Good for smaller rooms or modern interpretations of period styling.
324 (30mm × 16mm) - Versatile profile with clean lines. Sits between traditional and contemporary styling, making it adaptable to most interiors.
Florence (54mm × 17mm) - Wider profile that creates elegant, substantial frames. Works particularly well for formal dining rooms and studies.
Vienna (72mm × 24mm) - Our widest profile for grand interiors. Creates impressive panelling schemes in high-ceilinged rooms.
Planning Your Layout
Panel size and spacing affect how your room feels. Larger panels (900mm+ wide) suit bigger rooms and create a more formal appearance. Smaller panels (600mm wide) work better in compact spaces and feel less imposing.
Standard height for wainscoting is around 1000mm from floor level, typically using a dado rail to cap the top. Full-height panelling works best with ceiling heights of 2.7m or more.
Our free layout calculator shows your design in 3D and calculates exact material requirements. You can experiment with different profiles, spacing, and proportions before ordering.
Remember to account for existing features like light switches, radiators, and door frames. These often determine panel sizes more than aesthetic preferences.
Sizing and Installation
Mouldings come in three standard lengths: 2440mm, 3050mm, and 4200mm. Choose longer lengths to minimize joints in your design.
Installation involves cutting mouldings to size and fixing them directly to the wall with adhesive and panel pins. Corners need mitre cuts for neat joints.
Most profiles require basic DIY skills and standard tools - mitre saw, spirit level, measuring tape. The smooth MDF cuts cleanly without splintering.
Allow extra material for cutting waste and mistakes. A 10% overorder typically covers most projects unless you have complex layouts with many short pieces.
Finish Options
Primed - Single primer coat applied. You'll need to add undercoat before your final paint colour. Choose this for specialist paint systems or maximum control over build-up.
Undercoated - Primer plus undercoat applied. Ready for your final colour. This popular option saves preparation time and provides excellent coverage for most paint finishes.
Matt Grey - Complete ready-to-install finish. No painting required if you're happy with the neutral grey colour. Good for quick installations or industrial-style schemes.
Most customers choose undercoated mouldings. They're ready for painting but still allow complete colour flexibility. The white undercoat also provides better opacity for lighter final colours than building up from primer alone.
